Buyer beware.
Thatcher, 2 year old, woke up in the middle of the night crying that his leg hurt. Being sick myself and thinking that it was simply growing pains I applied Wintergreen with Coconut oil in a roller bottle on his leg. He continued to complain and cry that his leg hurt and he needed ice. After applying the Wintergreen roller several times and sleeping with ice packs on his legs he FINALLY went back to sleep.
The next morning Thatcher REFUSED to get out of bed. I explained to him that I needed him to walk so that I could tell how bad his legs hurt. My thoughts were that if he fell to the floor we would head to the ER. If he was limping then we would head to the pediatrician. He held his legs tight together and cried as he limped the ten steps to the bathroom. I immediately called Tyler and asked what happened last night that Thatcher is unable to walk. I was in freak out mode! What happened to my little boy?! He went to bed fine and woke up unable to walk!
Trying to get him dressed that morning he cried as I straightened his leg to put his pants on. He cried as I moved his legs to change his diaper. And he cried as I put him in his carseat to leave the house. There was no way that my two year could be faking his pain. What happened to cause this much pain?
I get him in to see his pediatrician who thinks he has a hairline fracture in his hip. She tells me that toddler fractures are very common. This is Friday, I don't want a "I think" answer; I want to know for sure what is causing Thatcher so much pain. I use my resources and find a referral for a pediatric orthopedic doctor. We get in later that afternoon.
After a long day for both Thatcher and I; emotionally and mentally exhausting to say the least. We are able to get the x-rays necessary and see an ortho at the same time. Thankfully the x-rays confirm there are no breaks-even hairline-in his leg at all. Discussing with the orthopedic pediatrician that Thatcher just got over being sick the week prior, he then diagnosed Thatcher with Toxic Synovitis.
WHAT?!?!?
What does this even mean-toxic synovitis? He explains it as a virus that never left Thatcher's body that is now causing inflammation in his hip which is causing him pain and limping. I immediately know that there is nothing the doctors can do for a virus-so my response was; now what? What does that mean for a plan of treatment? His response - anti-inflammatories. Anti-inflammatories....really that's it? Thatcher is FINALLY able to limp on his leg by late afternoon and all you want me to treat him with is an anti-inflammatory. I was both shocked and scared all at the same time.
Once I was able to get my emotions in check and think rationally I reached out to those I trust and did my research. These oils are recommended to support his body with both a virus and inflammation: Ravintsara, Hyssop, Myrrh, and Thyme. Thankfully I had Myrrh oil on hand. I made a roller bottle with Myrrh, Copaiba, Coconut oils and rubbed that on Thatcher's hip and bottoms of his feet. I then gave him an ice pack for his hip and diffused Myrrh while he slept.
Earlier in the week Catherine and I lead an Oils of the Bible class where I learned the benefits of ancient oils. I placed a drop of Sacred Frankincense under his tongue and prayed for Jesus to heal him.
Thatcher is sleeping well tonight after a long exhausting day of pain and doctors. I am thankful for answers and for speedy care by all involved.
Update: Thatcher woke up an entirely new boy. Yesterday he woke up screaming in pain and unable to walk...today he wakes up barely with a limp and playing! Thank you for your prayers! I am applying oils topically every diaper change to his hip and bottoms of his feet and will continue to apply for the next week for good measure.

1. | Associated topics: inflammation — "Cineole has mucolytic, bronchodilating and anti-inflammatory properties and reduces the exacerbation rate in patients suffering from COPD, as well as ameliorates symptoms in patients suffering from asthma and rhinosinusitis.... The effects of Cineole in the treatment of acute bronchitis were clearly measurable and could be proven after a treatment period of merely 4 days. This study corroborates the fact that Cineole actively and significantly reduces cough frequency after four days." | Link |
2. | Associated topics: virus — "The presence of beta-caryophyllene in many essential oils might contribute strongly to their antiviral ability. These results indicate that phenylpropanoids and sesquiterpenes present in essential oils contribute to their antiviral activity against HSV [herpes simplex virus]." | Link |
3. | Associated topics: virus — "Taken together, we found an essential oil blend [Orange, Clove, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary] notably attenuates influenza virus PR8 infection in vitro via inhibition of viral protein synthesis at the post-transcription level. The lack of toxicity and potent specific inhibition ability make the essential oil a possible antiviral drug for influenza virus proliferation control and treatment." | Link |
4. | Associated topics: inflammation — "[W]e studied the anti-inflammatory and gastroprotective effects of C. citratus [Lemongrass] and E. citriodora [Lemon Eucalyptus] essential oils on formol-induced edema and acetic acid induced abdominal cramps in Wistar rats.... In vivo analysis and histological assay showed that the two essential oils displayed significant dose-dependent edema [swelling] inhibition effect over time. They displayed strong analgesic [pain-relieving] and antipyretic [fever-reducing] properties similar to that induced by 50 mg/kg of acetylsalicylate of lysine.... This work demonstrates the anti-inflammatory property of Cymbopogon citratus [Lemongrass] and Eucalyptus citriodora [Lemon Eucalyptus], suggesting their potential role as adjuvant therapeutic alternatives in dealing with inflammatory-related diseases." | Link |
5. | Associated topics: inflammation — "To assess their anti-inflammatory activities, effects of essential oils on neutrophil activation were examined in vitro.... All essential oils tested at 0.1% concentration suppressed TNF-945;-induced neutrophil adherence, and, in particular, lemongrass, geranium, and spearmint oils clearly lowered the reaction even at 0.0125%. Similar inhibitory activities for the neutrophil adherence were obtained by their major constituent terpenoids: citral, geraniol, citronellol and carvone. Thus, some essential oils used as anti-inflammatory remedies suppress neutrophil activation by TNF-945; at a low concentration (0.0125-0.025%) in vitro." | Link |
6. | Associated topics: inflammation — "Ruxiang (Gummi olibanum), the dried gum resin of Boswellia carterii (BC) [frankincense], has been used in traditional Chinese medicine to alleviate pain and inflammation for thousands of years.... The data show that BC extract has significant anti-arthritic and anti-inflammation effects and suggest that these effects may be mediated via the suppression of pro-inflammatory cytokines." | Link |
7. | Associated topics: inflammation — "We have demonstrated that Boswellia frereana [frankincense] prevents collagen degradation, and inhibits the production of pro-inflammatory mediators and MMPs. Due to its efficacy we propose that B. frereana should be examined further as a potential therapeutic agent for treating inflammatory symptoms associated with arthritis." | Link |
8. | Associated topics: inflammation — "Anti-inflammatory, spasmolytic [muscle spasms], antimicrobial, antioxidant, carminative [flatulence] and immunomodulatory properties of caraway suggest that it might exert beneficial effects on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).... CHE and CEO [caraway essential oil] at all doses tested were effective in reducing colon tissue lesions and colitis indices and the efficacy was nearly the same when different doses of plant fractions were administered p.o. or i.p..... These data suggest that caraway fractions are both effective and possess anti-colitic activity irrespective of the dose and route of administration." | Link |
