I was asked to act as Chairman for my local Toastmasters chapter. This was numerous steps beyond my comfort level - speaking in front of a group of people was a challenge. Hosting a meeting of experienced Toastmasters was 'Over the Top'.
I'm a caregiver, a BodyTalk practitioner, and a supporter not a 'leader'. Anxiety was ramped. My subconscious, ever trying to protect me, and allowing me to be in my comfort zone, obliged. My symptoms started on Sunday which activated a virus and created generous amounts of phlegm.
I had ample justified opportunity to move into 'Woe be me, I'm too sick, I cannot do the Chairman's job this time, please get someone else'. I knew that my mind was just doing what it's supposed to do in the face of my fears.
Sickness is a physical reality. I knew I had to deal with the physical symptoms in addition to recognizing the emotional fear. I got out my Thieves oil blend, and downed 5-6 drops on my tongue.
Then Grapefruit all over my throat and lymph glands which were swollen. And Clove oil, 5-6 drops in a gel capsule with water. My throat was sore. I reapplied Thieves, Grapefruit and Clove every couple of hours. I thought I was on top of it by the evening when I did the last round of oils before bed.
By 2:30 am I was up vomiting. Took More oils. By 4:30 am I was up spewing and spitting. More oils. At 6:00 am when the alarm rang I was awake. I was determined I was going.
Finally my subconscious got the message and I started to feel clearer. With another round of Clove, Thieves and Grapefruit I headed out the door at 6:30 am for our 7:00 am meeting.
It went well! Now I feel fine. Still a bit of phlegm to dispel which may take a day or two. The anxiety is gone, the accomplishment is sealed in reality, and I look forward to taking on the Chairman's job again.
Without my oils, I would never have had the opportunity to move to a new level of physical, emotional, and mental wellness.

1. | Associated topics: emotions-/-feelings — "The present study indicated that lavender aromatherapy as a potential therapeutic modality could alleviate premenstrual emotional symptoms, which, at least in part, is attributable to the improvement of parasympathetic nervous system activity. This study further implies that HRV could evaluate the efficacy of aromatherapy using various fragrances to relieve premenstrual symptoms, and ultimately, support the mind and body health of women." | Link |
2. | Associated topics: cough — "Cineole has mucolytic, bronchodilating and anti-inflammatory properties and reduces the exacerbation rate in patients suffering from COPD, as well as ameliorates symptoms in patients suffering from asthma and rhinosinusitis.... The effects of Cineole in the treatment of acute bronchitis were clearly measurable and could be proven after a treatment period of merely 4 days. This study corroborates the fact that Cineole actively and significantly reduces cough frequency after four days." | Link |
3. | Associated topics: virus — "The presence of beta-caryophyllene in many essential oils might contribute strongly to their antiviral ability. These results indicate that phenylpropanoids and sesquiterpenes present in essential oils contribute to their antiviral activity against HSV [herpes simplex virus]." | Link |
4. | Associated topics: virus — "Taken together, we found an essential oil blend [Orange, Clove, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary] notably attenuates influenza virus PR8 infection in vitro via inhibition of viral protein synthesis at the post-transcription level. The lack of toxicity and potent specific inhibition ability make the essential oil a possible antiviral drug for influenza virus proliferation control and treatment." | Link |
5. | Associated topics: sore-/-scratchy-throat — "The antibacterial activity of 14 essential oils and their major constituents in the gaseous state was evaluated against [respiratory tract pathogens] Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Staphylococcus aureus. [The] oils [with cinnamon bark, lemongrass, and thyme being most potent] and their major constituents were shown to be effective against various bacteria tested.... These results indicate that the antibacterial action of essential oils was most effective when at high vapor concentration for a short time." | Link |
6. | Associated topics: anxiety-/-worry — "After inhalation of clary sage oil, cortisol levels were significantly decreased.... Thyroid stimulating hormone was also reduced.... Clary sage oil has antidepressant-like effect...." | Link |
7. | Associated topics: anxiety-/-worry — "Lavender, mint [peppermint], orange, rose, chamomile, rosemary, and sage were used.... Depression levels in the touch-music-aroma therapy group... showed a larger decrease than in the... control groups [that did not include aromatherapy].... [FMS] symptoms such as restless sleep, headache, morning fatigue, exhaustion, feeling like crying, and bowel complaints were also significantly reduced." | Link |
8. | Associated topics: sore-/-scratchy-throat — "Streptococcus pyogenes [strep] plays an important role in the pathogenesis of tonsillitis.... [T]hyme, cinnamon, lemongrass, tea tree, lavender, oregano, clove, palmarosa, or cajeput [melaleuca] EOs [essential oils] are known to be active against Streptococcus pyogenes, while oregano, basil, mint [peppermint], rosemary, and lavender EOs are known to inhibit another Gram-positive bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus [staph].... We showed that cinnamon presented the higher activity against S. pyogenes compared to the other EOs tested.... 14 [essential oils] showed antibacterial activity against Streptococcus pyogenes.... Among them Cinnamomum verum [cinnamon bark], Cymbopogon citratus [Xiang Mao], Thymus vulgaris CT thymol [thyme], Origanum compactum [oregano], and Satureja montana [Mountain Savory] essential oils exhibited significant antibacterial activity. The in vitro results reported here suggest that, for patients suffering from bacterial throat infections, if aromatherapy is used, these essential oils, considered as potential antimicrobial agents, should be preferred." | Link |
