I live in a very dry and dusty area which is worse in the winter with indoor heat. My lips were dry and cracked. Foolishly I ignored it. I developed a cold sore, ignored that, it cleared up eventually but soon started again.
Finally, I woke up and applied Lavender Oil. The pain relief was instantaneous and the swelling and dryness were relieved shortly after. In two days, my mouth was better and I haven't had another one with not many changes in the climate yet.
Had I applied the Lavender on my dry lips, I would have prevented the cold sore in the first place. I know this....How soon we forget, when we feel well after a crisis, what got us there!
