Trachea Stuck Open; Could Not Swallow For 2 Days

A 73-year-old friend who lives alone said he had swallowed a pill on Sunday, and his throat had seized around it. So he had been unable to swallow anything up to the time he reached out for prayer on Tuesday. He was not actively choking unless he tried to swallow, but, if the slightest drop (including his own saliva) went down his throat, it made him cough and choke horribly.

When I first found out, I insisted that he go to the emergency room. But he said this had happened to him multiple times over the years, and he just wanted to wait it out... even though this time was the worst he could remember.

In less than 20 minutes his throat opened, and he was able to swallow normally for the first time in nearly 48 hours. He joyfully downed about 5 glasses of water.
